Utah State Office of Education Endorses Cricket

Cricket! A New School Sports Clinic & Program. The Utah Cricket Association is interested in furthering the worldwide spread and popularity of cricket by presenting cricket clinics for 4th through X grades. Their program is an outgrowth of the Kanga School Cricket Program in Australia and the extensively proven KWIK Cricket Program in England. The clinics are between one to one and a half hours long and are very engaging for students. A variety of activities are presented in a developmentally appropriate manner, and the presenters are very good at helping students engage in learning activities suitable for their current skill level. The activities incorporate eye-hand coordination skills, and equal participation for children with varying athletic skills. An instructional manual and video tape are available for teachers.

Coaches and PE specialist are excitement about Cricket’s potential to fill an increasing deficit within their student’s hitting, throwing and catching skills.  Coaches and PE specialists have validated the findings and research done by UCA’s President, Steven Hooper, regarding the decline in throwing and hitting skills among school aged children and the attitudes of today’s kids towards team sports. Kids today are increasingly more sedimentary and individualistic. Team sports are not as popular with a growing majority of kids due to the fear of failure, competition, being singled out and having to subordinate yourself to an authority figure.

Our program emphasis is on character building i.e. sportsmanship ethics, leadership, teamwork and courage as the main skills set students learn, in addition to the physical hand-eye coordination and motor skills. Cricket places the responsibility on the player to develop his/her skills at the highest standard possible i.e. the LAWS of Cricket that have been a tradition for centuries rather than only focusing on victory and defeat. Cricket does not just provide lip service to these worthwhile goals, but demands that sportsmanship ethics be displayed, or that’s not Cricket! How the game is played is as much about Cricket as hitting a home run or catching a high fly.
